Gliding to Glory: Naltar Valley Hosts Pakistan’s 2024–25 National Speed Skating Championship

In January 2025, the National Ice Sports Championship — featuring men’s and women’s speed‑skating events — was held in Naltar Valley, Gilgit‑Baltistan. The competition was part of a broader national winter‑sports programme that also included ice hockey, curling, figure skating, and relay races.

The championship drew teams from across Pakistan — including provinces and regions such as Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), as well as institutional teams like Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts (GB Scouts) and Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

Results & Highlights

  • In the men’s speed‑skating event, GB Scouts emerged victorious.
  • On the women’s side, the gold was claimed by the team from Gilgit-Baltistan Winter Sports Association (GBWSA).
  • Overall, GB (Gilgit‑Baltistan) dominated the championship: across all ice‑sport disciplines they secured a total of 12 medals (3 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze).

The Winter Sports Federation Pakistan (WSFP) is the national governing body to develop and promote the sport of skiing in Pakistan. The federation was formed in December 1990 and to this day handles all the winter sports including skiing, alpine, cross-country, ice hockey, ice skating, snowboarding, curling, biathlon, slalom, downhill, and so on.
